Small Item Sortation

Small item sortation can be accomplished with a variety of sorters depending upon the product type and sortation rate. With any sorter, the parts per minute rate depends upon the item lengths, weights, conveyor speed, and required gap.
Applications for Small Item Sortation
- Returns Processing
- Zip Code Sorting
- Order Fulfillment of Small Items
- Pharmaceutical Fulfillment (Blister Cards)

System Operation
Small items are typically sorted based upon a barcode label on the top of the item. If this barcode contains all the information necessary for sortation, then a fixed lane assignment sort is done. If the barcode must be related to a database or table, SolidRoute™ must be used with SolidComm™ to establish the legacy host interface.
Item Gapping
As cartons enter the small item sortation system, they are cingulated
and aligned to make the sortation easier. Sorters with bidirectional
diverts will have the cartons aligned to the center. The process
also separates the cartons to allow for easier scanning.
In Bound Scan
After the items have been cingulated, the barcode is scanned and a divert lane assigned. The item is tracked down to the correct lane and diverted. Divert confirmation is sent to SolidRoute™ from the divert acknowledge photoeye.
System Benefits
A small item sortation system can offer substantial cost savings
over manual sortation methods. Accuracy approaches 100% due to
the bulletproof design of the control system. The embedded reporting
provides an excellent management tool for managing outbound items
or returns.
