CASE STUDY: Automatic Shanklin Wrapping and Bottom Labeling System.

The Problem: Need to automatically wrap and label System
A major manufacturer of satellite receivers wanted to automate the packaging of the systems, as their touch labor for the shipping line had reached over 20 people. Xpedx was contracted to supply a packaging solution and CASI was brought in to do the packaging line systems integration and Oracle ERP Interface.
The Solution – Automatic Identification and relabeling of the product
CASI utilized its labeling controls module - SolidLabel to control the upstream slider bed conveyor, interface to the Shanklin wrapper, and automatically label the receivers.

The system is required to read a very small code 39 8 mil barcode from the front or top of the receiver in ladder format. This barcode has the serial number of the unit that is used to update the oracle ERP with shipping information.

After the barcode scan, the unit is transported into the Shanklin wrapper where the receiver is wrapped for shipment.

SolidLabel then tracks this unit to the labeling zone where a bottom labeling system places a label with the serial number on the unit.

Once he label is applied, a Datalogic DS2100 barcode scanner confirms placement of the label.

The receiver travels to the end of the line where an operator manually palletizes the units.
Benefits from the new efficiencies
Benefits from the system include reduced labor from the automated process and the confidence to know that the automatic system is ensuring the right label is on the receiver.
