CASE STUDY: Print and Apply Labeling

The Problem: Automatically Print and Apply Sortation Barcode
CASI provided an in line fulfillment system to a customer that required a sortation barcode label to be applied to the top of the carton. The cartons are presented in a random orientation and the data for the automatic sortation is in the customer’s order entry system.
The Solution: High Speed Print and Apply Labeling
CASI provided a high speed print and apply system using SolidLabel from the SolidSuite WCS suite of software. SolidComm host system interface is utilized to communicate with the customer’s legacy host system.
Turnkey System Overview

As cartons are picked to belt and guided into position using value guide. A control system utilizing a VFD for the pick belt maintains proper spacing by adjusting the speed of the pick belt. This method was chosen instead of a metering belt to avoid additional transitions that can tumble small boxes.

As the cartons enter the labeling zone, the box is scanned on all four sides to read the SKU label of the product. This data is transmitted to SolidLabel where a label is prepared. Once the label is printed and applied, an additional scanner confirms label placement by reading the barcode on the label.

If any exception such as a no read, label not found or label confirmation failure, the CASI 100 scanner MUX flashes an amber light to alert the operators of the failure. A text message on the CASI 1100 system controller is also annuciated. An error label is printed and applied to the top of the box.
Benefits from the new efficiencies
The benefits from the new system include automatically checking for missing items before cartons are shipped reducing labor and manual QC involvement.
