CASE STUDY: Internet Order Fulfillment System

The Problem - Automate Dotcom Product Fulfillment
CASI was contracted by Cisco-Eagle material handling to provide a order processing system that automatically would fulfill product for an internet based provider of cell phones and accessories. The system must interface to the customer’s in house warehouse management system and control the entire fulfillment operation.
The Solution:
CASI provided modules from the SolidSuite WCS for labeling, picking, zone routing and automatic manifesting.
Fulfillment System Overview

The system starts right after the automatic case erector when a license plate barcode is applied to the side of the carton. This label is related to the order number in the picking and zone routing software.

Once the license plate barcode is on the carton, a fixed position barcode scanner is used to confirm placement of the label.

Orders are automatically routed only to the zones that have a pick in them. As the carton enters the pick zone, a fixed position barcode scanner reads the license plate barcode on the side of the carton.

The carton is diverted in the zone using a SortMaster 125 bi-directional sorter.

After all items have routed through the pick zones, items needing special handling or phones waiting on activation are routed to a QC station.

After the items have a packing slip and dunnage manually inserted, the carton is weighed by a CASI 921 intermittent checkweigher. A label is applied to the top of the case and label placement confirmed by a DS2400 fixed position barcode scanner.

Exceptions such as a no read are diverted using a SortMaster 130 pusher divert. The Printer label applicator applies a label listing the type of exception that occurred.
System Benefits and Efficiencies
The in Automatic Fulfillment System lowers labor costs and allows the faster processing of orders. The system also allows peak volume to grow substantially without system modification.
