The Material Handling Problem: Automate the FedEx manifest shipping stations

CASI was approached by an on line supplier of heath care products to automate two existing shipping manifest stations. This company had two manual stations that simply could not keep up with the volume and cost the company more in labor than a CASI automated solution.

The Automation Solution: Automatic In - Line Manifest System

CASI provided a 951 In Line conveyor scale, Datalogic 4800 barcode scanners, 250 Printer label applicators along with carrier manifest software. This turnkey system solution doubled the rate of the existing system and removed all touch labor.

Turnkey System Overview:

The system solution begins with an interface to the customers WMS picking system using SolidComm. This allows us to relate the address and order data for each carton to the license plate barcode.

Cartons travel through an automated case sealer down existing line shaft conveyor to a series of 24 Volt zero pressure accumulation zones before the in motion scale.

Before entering the in motion scale, the license plate barcode is read by the Datalogic DS4800 fixed mount barcode scanner. This identifies the order in the system.

Once the barcode is scanned, the carton travels across the 951 in motion scale where the weight of the package is obtained. CASI offers the option of cubing the carton at this stage, as well as order audit by weight.

Once the carton exits the scale it enters the label application zone where the shipping label is applied.

A fixed mount barcode scanner is used to confirm placement of the label.

Once the label is confirmed, a green light is flashed on the CASI 100 and the carton is transported to the dock door.

All control for the FedEx Shipping manifest comes from the CASI 1100 system controller.
