CASE
STUDY: In Motion Checkweigh on Full and
Split Case Items
in 3PL Environment

The Problem
A major 3PL Logistics Company contracted with Precision Warehouse Design (PWD) in Dallas, Texas to design a system that would automatically QC each pick and full case orders using in line checkweighing as they traveled on their transport conveyor. PWD selected CASI as the supplier of the checkweigher and metering belts.
The Solution
The solution involved installing a CASI 951 Checkweigher into existing zero pressure accumulation conveyor along with two 9120 break metering belt systems. An interface to the 3PL warehouse management system was established using SolidComm. The conveyor controls and Checkweigh operation was performed by SolidCheck.
Checkweigh System Overview

As cartons travel down the conveyor, two CASI 9120 brake meter belt conveyors properly gap the cartons so that only one carton is on the conveyor scale at a time.

A license plate barcode is read in ladder format by a Datalogic DS6300 barcode scanner as the carton travels onto the in motion scale. This data is sent to the CASI SolidCheck system where it is compared to the expected weight for the carton.

If the carton is out of tolerances set by the upper and lower control limits, a divert signal is transmitted to the existing AB PLC and the carton is diverted to a QC station for a manual check.
System Benefits and Efficiencies
The automatic QC system will enable the 3PL to eliminate picking errors and reduce labor costs associated with manual quality checks on outbound packages. The first facility using this system gained 20% more efficiency in the first week of operation over projected estimates.
